Abstract The objective of this work was to determine the sample size necessary for estimating the means of wheat (Triticum aestivum) traits, obtained through measurement, counting, and weighing. Seventeen uniformity trials were performed with 1,790 plants harvested randomly, whose following traits were evaluated: lengths of the main stem and main stem ear (measurement); number of leaves, stems, and ears (counting); and mass of fresh and dry matter of leaves, stems, and ears (weighing). The Bartlett and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests and Welch’s analysis of variance were performed. Skewness, central tendency, and variability were determined, and sample size was calculated to estimate the means of the 13 evaluated traits, considering estimation errors (semi-amplitudes of the 95% confidence interval) equal to 5, 10, 15, and 20% of the mean. There is a decrease in the sample size to estimate the means of wheat traits obtained through weighing, counting, and measuring, in this order. In an experiment to estimate the mean of wheat traits obtained by weighing, counting, and measuring with a maximum error of 10% of the mean at a 95% confidence interval, 117, 76, and 9 plants per treatment are needed, respectively.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o tamanho de amostra necessário para estimar a média de caracteres de trigo (Triticum aestivum) obtidos por meio de medição, contagem e pesagem. Dezessete ensaios de uniformidade foram feitos com 1,790 plantas colhidas aleatoriamente, cujos seguintes caracteres foram avaliados: comprimentos do colmo principal e da espiga do colmo principal (medição); número de folhas, colmos e espigas (contagem); e massa de matéria fresca e seca de folhas, colmos e espigas (pesagem). Realizaram-se os testes de Bartlett e Kolmogorov-Smirnov e a análise de variância de Welch. Determinaram-se as medidas de assimetria, tendência central e variabilidade, e calculou-se o tamanho de amostra para a estimação da média dos 13 caracteres avaliados, tendo-se considerado erros de estimação (semiamplitudes do intervalo de confiança de 95%) iguais a 5, 10, 15 e 20% da média. Há um decréscimo do tamanho de amostra para estimar a média dos caracteres de trigo obtidos por meio de pesagem, contagem e medição, nesta ordem. Em um experimento para estimar a média dos caracteres de trigo obtidos por pesagem, contagem e medição com erro máximo de 10% da média e nível de confiança de 95%, são necessárias 117, 76 e 9 plantas por tratamento, respectivamente.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o intervalo de colheita para produção de fitomassa de manjerona (Origanum majorana), em transplantes no verão e no inverno. Foram realizados dois experimentos independentes em cultivo fora do solo: um com transplante no verão e outro no inverno, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com cinco intervalos de colheita (30, 45, 60, 72 e 90 dias) e quatro repetições. Foram determinadas as massas de matéria fresca e seca de folhas, ramos e parte aérea. Para cada planta, foi calculada a produção acumulada nas colheitas em função dos dias após o transplante. A massa de matéria fresca de folhas foi superior nos intervalos de 60 e 90 dias, no transplante de verão, e de 72 e 90 dias, no transplante de inverno. Colheitas em intervalos de 60 dias, no transplante de verão, e de 72 dias, no transplante de inverno, são apropriadas para produção de fitomassa de manjerona.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine the harvest interval for phytomass production of marjoram (Origanum majorana) in summer and winter transplants. Two independent experiments were performed in off-ground cultivation: one with a summer and another with a winter transplant, in a completely randomized design with five harvest intervals (30, 45, 60, 72, and 90 days) and four replicates. The fresh and dry masses of leaves, branches, and aerial part were determined. For each plant, the production accumulated in the harvests was calculated as affected by days after the transplant. The fresh matter mass of the leaves was higher at the intervals of 60 and 90 days, in the summer transplant, and of 72 and 90 days, in the winter transplant. Harvesting at intervals of 60 days in the summer transplant and of 72 days in the winter transplant are appropriate for marjoram phytomass production.

RESUMO Pendões de milho, com maior comprimento e maior número de ramificações acabam impedindo a passagem da radiação solar para o dossel superior da planta e atuam como dreno de fotoassimilados, sendo que, poderiam ser destinados a produção de grãos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar se há divergência genética, em relação à produtividade de grãos e os caracteres de pendão entre os cultivares de milho, em três anos agrícolas. Foram avaliados 20 cultivares de milho e mensurados 11 caracteres de pendão e a produtividade de grãos. Para cada caractere, foram realizadas as análises de variância individual e conjunta. Foi realizada a análise de componentes principais, determinada a matriz da distância generalizada de Mahalanobis entre os cultivares e realizada a análise de divergência genética, por meio do método de agrupamento da ligação média entre grupo (UPGMA) e, a partir disso, foi construído o dendrograma. Para validação do agrupamento calculou-se o coeficiente de correlação cofenética. Existe divergência genética entre os cultivares de milho e foram formados seis grupos de cultivares. O comprimento do pendão, o número total de ramificações, a massa de matéria seca da espiga central e a produtividade de grãos são os caracteres que mais contribuem para a divergência genética entre os cultivares de milho.

ABSTRACT Maize tassels with a longer length and higher number of branches prevent the passage of solar radiation into the upper plant canopy and act as a drain for photoassimilates that could be used for grain production. This study aimed to verify if there is genetic divergence regarding grain yield and tassel traits among maize cultivars in three agricultural years. Twenty maize cultivars were evaluated and 11 tassel traits and grain yield were measured. Individual and joint analyses of variance were performed for each trait. Principal component analysis was performed, the generalized Mahalanobis distance matrix between cultivars was determined, and the genetic divergence analysis was performed, using the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA), which allowed constructing the dendrogram. The cophenetic correlation coefficient was calculated to validate the cluster. There is genetic divergence among maize cultivars and six groups of cultivars were formed. Tassel length, total number of branches, central spike dry matter, and grain yield are the traits that most contribute to the genetic divergence among maize cultivars.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o tamanho ótimo de parcela para avaliar a massa de matéria fresca de trigo mourisco (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) das cultivares IPR91-Baili e IPR92-Altar, em cenários formados por combinações de números de tratamentos, números de repetições e níveis de precisão experimental. Foram conduzidos 16 ensaios de uniformidade (experimentos em branco), sendo oito com a cultivar IPR91-Baili e oito com a cultivar IPR92-Altar. Os ensaios foram realizados em oito épocas de semeadura. Foi avaliada a massa de matéria fresca em 576 unidades experimentais básicas (UEB) de 1 m * 1 m (36 UEB por ensaio). Foi estimado o índice de heterogeneidade do solo de Smith (1938). Foi determinado o tamanho de parcela por meio do método de Hatheway (1961) em cenários formados pelas combinações de i tratamentos (i = 5, 10, 15 e 20), r repetições (r = 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 e 8) e d níveis de precisão (d = 10%, 11%, 12%, 13%, 14%, 15%, 16%, 17%, 18%, 19% e 20%). Para avaliar a massa de matéria fresca de trigo mourisco das cultivares IPR91-Baili e IPR92-Altar, nos delineamentos inteiramente casualizado e blocos completos ao acaso, com 5 a 20 tratamentos e oito repetições, parcelas de 8 m3 de área útil são suficientes para identificar diferenças significativas entre tratamentos, a 5% de probabilidade, de 15% da média geral do experimento.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to determine the optimal plot size to evaluate the fresh weight in buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) of the IPR91-Baili and IPR92-Altar cultivars, in scenarios formed by combinations of numbers of treatments, numbers of replicates, and levels of experimental precision. Sixteen uniformity trials (blank experiments) were carried out, eight with cultivar IPR91-Baili and eight with cultivar IPR92-Altar. The trials were performed in eight sowing dates. The fresh weight was evaluated in 576 basic experimental units (BEU) of 1 m x 1 m (36 BEU per trial). The soil heterogeneity index of Smith (1938) was estimated. The plot size was determined by the method of Hatheway (1961) in scenarios formed by combinations of i treatments (i = 5, 10, 15, and 20), r replicates (r = 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8), and d precision levels (d = 10%, 11%, 12%, 13%, 14%, 15%, 16%, 17%, 18%, 19%, and 20%). To evaluate the fresh weight in buckwheat of the IPR91-Baili and IPR92-Altar cultivars, in experiments under completely randomized and randomized block designs, with 5 to 20 treatments and eight replicates, plots of 8 m3of useful area are sufficient to identify significant differences between treatments, at 5% probability level, of 15% of the overall mean of the experiment.

RESUMEN El objetivo de este trabajo fue ajustar el modelo Logístico para las masas fresca y seca de hojas y las masas fresca y seca de parte aérea de cuatro cultivares de lechuga para describir el crecimiento en el verano. Se utilizaron los cultivares de lechuga Crocantela, Elisa, Rubinela y Vera, cultivados en el verano de los años 2017 y 2018, en ambiente protegido y cultivo sin suelo. Después de 7 días del trasplante, se determinó las masas fresca y seca de hojas y las masas fresca y seca de parte aérea de ocho plantas, estas evaluaciones se realizaron cada cuatro días. Los parámetros del modelo fueron estimados utilizando el software R, por el método de mínimos cuadrados y proceso iterativo de Gauss-Newton. También se estimaron los intervalos de confianza de los parámetros, verificados los supuestos, calculados los indicadores de calidad del ajuste, los puntos críticos y cuantificados las no linealidades paramétrica e intrínseca. El modelo de crecimiento logístico presentó un ajuste satisfactorio para las masas fresca y seca de hojas y para las masas fresca y seca de parte aérea para las cultivares de lechuga Crocantela, Elisa, Rubinela y Vera, siendo así, indicado para describir el crecimiento de los cultivares de lechuga.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to fit a logistic model to leaf fresh and dry matter and shoot fresh and dry matter in four lettuce cultivars to describe growth in summer. The cultivars Crocantela, Elisa, Rubinela, and Vera were evaluated in the summers of 2017 and 2018 in soil in a protected environment and in a soilless system. Seven days after transplanting, the leaf fresh and dry matter and shoot fresh and dry matter of eight plants were weighed every four days. The model parameters were estimated using R software with the least squares method and iterative process of Gauss-Newton. This study also estimated the confidence intervals of the parameters, verified the assumptions of the models, calculated the goodness-of-fit measures and the critical points, and quantified the parametric and intrinsic nonlinearities. The logistic growth model fit well to the fresh and dry matter in the leaves and shoots in the cultivars Crocantela, Elisa, Rubinela, and Vera and described the growth of lettuce.

RESUMO: Os objetivos deste trabalho foram ajustar os modelos Gompertz e Logístico para as massas de matéria fresca e seca de folhas, e as massas de matéria fresca e seca de parte aérea de três cultivares de alface e indicar o modelo que melhor descreve o crescimento no outono-inverno. As cultivares de alface Gloriosa, Pira Verde e Stella, foram avaliadas no outono-inverno de 2016 e outono-inverno de 2017, em cultivo sem solo em ambiente protegido. Após o transplante, a cada sete dias, foram pesadas as massas de matéria fresca e seca de folhas e as massas de matéria fresca e seca de parte aérea. Essas variáveis dependentes foram ajustadas em função da soma térmica acumulada. Foram estimados os parâmetros dos modelos Gompertz e Logístico, verificados os pressupostos dos modelos, calculados os indicadores de qualidade do ajuste e os pontos críticos e quantificadas as medidas de curvatura intrínseca e de parametrização. Os modelos Logístico e Gompertz apresentam ajuste satisfatório para as massas de matéria fresca e seca de folhas e para as massas de matéria fresca e seca de parte aérea, para as cultivares de alface Gloriosa, Pira Verde e Stella, no outono-inverno. O modelo Logístico é o que melhor descreve o crescimento das cultivares de alface.

ABSTRACT: The objectives of this study were to fit the Gompertz and Logistic models for the fresh and dry matter of leaves and the fresh and dry matter of shoots of three lettuce cultivars and indicate the best model to describe their growth in autumn-winter. The lettuce cultivars Gloriosa, Pira Verde, and Stella were evaluated in the autumn-winter of 2016 and 2017, in soilless in a protected environment. After transplantation, the fresh and dry matter of leaves and shoots were weighed every seven days. These dependent variables were fit using the accumulated thermal sum. The parameters of the Gompertz and Logistic models were estimated, the assumptions of the models were verified, the indicators of fit quality and critical points were calculated and the parametric and intrinsic curvature measures quantified. The Logistic and Gompertz models presented a satisfactory adjustment for the fresh and dry matter of leaves and the fresh and dry matter of shoots, for the lettuce cultivars Gloriosa, Pira Verde and Stella, in autumn-winter. The Logistic model best describes the growth of the lettuce cultivars.

Foram conduzidos 15 ensaios de uniformidade com aveia preta e ervilhaca, em cultivo solteiro e em consórcio. Foi avaliada a massa de matéria fresca em 540 unidades experimentais básicas (UEB) de 1 m × 1 m (36 UEB por ensaio). Foi estimado o índice de heterogeneidade do solo de SMITH (1938). Foi determinado o tamanho de parcela por meio do método de HATHEWAY (1961) em cenários formados pelas combinações de i tratamentos (i = 5, 10, 15 e 20), r repetições (r = 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 e 8) e d níveis de precisão (d = 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10%, 12%, 14%, 16%, 18% e 20%). Para avaliar a massa de matéria fresca de aveia preta e de ervilhaca, em cultivo solteiro ou em consórcio, nos delineamentos inteiramente casualizado e de blocos completos ao acaso, com 5 a 20 tratamentos e com cinco repetições, parcelas de 10 m2 são suficientes para identificar diferenças significativas entre tratamentos, a 0,05 de probabilidade, de 10% da média geral do experimento.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to determine the optimal plot size for evaluating the fresh weight of black oats (Avena strigosa Schreb) and the common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) in scenarios comprising combinations of the number of treatments, number of replications and levels of precision. Fifteen uniformity trials were conducted with single-crop and intercropped black oats and vetch. Fresh weight was evaluated in 540 basic experimental units (BEU), each of 1 m × 1 m (36 BEU per trial). The Smith index of soil heterogeneity (1938) was estimated. Plot size was determined using the HATHEWAY method (1961), in scenarios comprising combinations of i treatments (i = 5, 10, 15 and 20), r replications (r = 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8) and d levels of precision (d = 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10%, 12%, 14%, 16%, 18% and 20%). To evaluate the fresh weight of monocropped or intercropped black oats and vetch in a completely randomized or randomized complete block design, with from 5 to 20 treatments and five replications, plots of 10 m2 are sufficient to identify, at a probability of 0.05, significant differences between treatments of 10% of the overall mean value of the experiment.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar as relações dreno-fonte e seus efeitos sobre o número e o crescimento de pontas de estolões de plantas matrizes de morangueiro 'Camino Real'. Três tipos de fontes foram avaliadas: uma desfolha aos 96 dias após o plantio (DAP), duas desfolhas aos 50 e 96 DAP e plantas matrizes sem desfolha. Quatro tipos de drenos foram analisados: pontas de estolão coletadas semanal e mensalmente, quatro pontas enraizadas em vasos e quatro estolões de crescimento livre. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado com parcelas subdivididas e quatro repetições. Os tipos de fonte foram dispostos nas parcelas, e os tipos de dreno, nas subparcelas. Foram determinados o número de pontas, o diâmetro de coroa e a massa de matéria seca. O número e o crescimento das pontas foram mais elevados nas plantas sem desfolhamento, e diminuíram 44,7% nas plantas matrizes com duas desfolhas. As duas desfolhas não reduziram a massa de matéria seca das pontas apenas nas plantas com estolões enraizados, as quais produziram pontas 50% mais pesadas. A desfolha das plantas matrizes com estolões enraizados pode ser usada para reduzir-lhes o crescimento, sem reduzir a emissão e o crescimento das pontas de estolão.

The objective of this work was to determine the sink-source relationships and their effects on the number and growth of runner tips of 'Camino Real' strawberry stock plants. Three types of sources were evaluated: one defoliation at 96 days after planting (DAP), two defoliations at 50 and 96 DAP, and mother plants without defoliation. Four types of sink were accessed: runner tips collected weekly and monthly, four stolons with rooted runner tips in pots, and four freely-grown stolons. A completely randomized experimental design was used in a split-plot arrangement, with four replicates. The source types were placed in the plots, and sink types in the subplots. The number of runner tips, the crown diameter, and the dry matter mass were determined. Number and growth of tips were higher on plants without defoliation, and decreased 44.7% on twice-defoliated mother plants. The two-defoliation management did not reduce runner tip dry matter mass only on plants with rooted stolons, which produced runner tips 50% heavier. Defoliation of mother plants bearing rooting stolons can be used to reduce their growth, without reducing the emission and growth of runner tips.

O objetivo do trabalho foi determinar o crescimento e a partição de massa seca entre órgãos de plantas matrizes de morangueiro cultivadas sob cinco concentrações de (N) nitrogênio na solução nutritiva e seu efeito na emissão e no crescimento de pontas de estolões. O experimento foi desenvolvido em ambiente protegido, de setembro de 2010 a março de 2011, em sistema de cultivo fora do solo com as cultivares Oso Grande e Camino Real. Foram estudadas concentrações de N de 5,12; 7,6; 10,12 (testemunha); 12,62 e 15.12 mmol L-1 na solução nutritiva em um esquema fatorial 5x2 em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Todas as pontas de estolões emitidas com pelo menos uma folha expandida (patente requerida) foram semanalmente coletadas e contadas durante todo o período de emissão. O número de folhas, massa seca (MS) de folhas, coroas e raízes e área foliar específica e índice de área foliar (IAF) das plantas matrizes foram determinadas no fim do experimento. O aumento na concentração de N de 5,12 para 15,12 mmol L-1 reduziu o crescimento da coroa, das raízes e o IAF das plantas matrizes de morangueiro, mas não afetou a emissão e o crescimento das pontas de estolões. Conclui-se que para a produção comercial de pontas de estolões a concentração de N na solução nutritiva pode ser de 5,12 mmol L-1.

The objective of this research was to determine growth and dry matter partitioning among organs of strawberry stock plants under five Nitrogen concentrations in the nutrient solution and its effects on emission and growth of runner tips. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions, from September 2010 to March 2011, in a soilless system with Oso Grande and Camino Real cultivars. Nitrogen concentrations of 5.12, 7.6, 10.12 (control), 12.62 and 15.12 mmol L-1 in the nutrient solution were studied in a 5x2 factorial randomised experimental design. All runner tips bearing at least one expanded leaf (patent requested) were collected weekly and counted during the growth period. The number of leaves, dry matter (DM) of leaves, crown and root, specific leaf area and leaf area index (LAI) was determined at the final harvest. Increasing N concentration in the nutrient solution from 5.12 to 15.12 mmol L-1 reduces growth of crown, roots and LAI of strawberry stock plants but did not affect emission and growth of runner tips. It was concluded that for the commercial production of plug plants the optimal nitrogen concentration in the nutrient solution should be 5.12 mmol L-1.
